Mustangs send ENMU into polar vortex, 66-41

- Midwestern State stepped up the defensive effort in a 66-41 Lone Star Conference win over Eastern New Mexico Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

It was the third straight win for the Mustangs, who improved to 11-4 on the season and to 3-0 in league play. Midwestern takes its momentum into Wednesday night's showdown against rival Tarleton State at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

"I challenged the guys to want to defend," MSU coach Nelson Haggerty said. "We stressed the importance of defense and rebounding. We didn't get them any open looks. Tonight was a great example of the guys taking on personal challenges like challenging (ENMU senior guard Rodney) Blackmon."

Blackmon, who came in the game as the LSC's third leading scorer at 18.1 points per game, was held without a field goal (0-9) and his first point of the game came on a free throw 34 minutes into the contest.

The Mustangs held Eastern New Mexico to an ice-cold 19.3-percent shooting for the game which marks MSU's lowest opponents' field goal percentage during the NCAA Division II era which began in 1996-97.

Midwestern held the Greyhounds to 14.3 percent from the field (4-for-28) in the second half which marks the second lowest opponent field goal percentage in a half. It was the lowest since the Mustangs limited Southeastern Oklahoma State to 4-for-29 shooting (13.8 percent) in a 72-42 win on Dec. 12, 2009.

But the Mustangs needed a 13-3 spurt to close the opening half to break open a close contest as MSU carried a 36-26 lead into the second half.

Midwestern controlled the second half and continued to put the clamps on the 'Hounds holding them without a field goal for 11:10 in between a transition bucket by Rafael Love with 14:28 to play until Love banked in another layup with 3:18 to play.

Love's second bucket cut the MSU advantage to 20 as he accounted for two of ENMU's four second-half field goals.

Midwestern senior guard Cam Adderley paced a group of four players scoring in double figures with 14 points and seven rebounds, while senior guard Monzaigo Williams added 13 points and five assists.

Senior forward Eddie D'Haiti pitched in 10 points and snagged six rebounds, while senior guard DeJuan Plummer notched 10 points off of the bench.

Love paced the ENMU with 13 points and eight rebounds as the Greyhounds fell to 6-7 on the season and 0-2 in LSC play.
