Team of the Week: Hirschi Huskies Tennis

WICHITA FALLS - For the first time in program history, the Hirschi Huskies tennis team is in the playoffs, advancing to the regional quarterfinals.

"It's so much fun to be able to be a part of this team and we've come so far, and it's a first time for us and it's so exciting," said freshman Savana Mayfield.

"To see how far we've come when I first started coaching here 5 years ago when we were just pretty much starting from ground zero to where we are now," said head coach Lee Gregg. "It's incredible. It's a testament to the kids and all their hard work that they've put in, just buying in to the way we do things and what we're trying to accomplish. It's taken awhile, but it just feels good to a part of something special."

The Huskies claimed bi-district and area championships after shutting out both Big Spring and Lake Worth by 14-0 scores.

"I thought it would be a lot closer, and then we started to get on the court and our team was just dominating," Mayfield said. "And we were doing great and I'm just so proud of us."

"We have a tough district, we've gotten some good wins against some tough teams," said Gregg. "We've had to really battle and win some close matches and I think that has just helped us going into the playoffs, so we were ready, we were prepared in our first round and played really well to beat Big Spring 14-0 and we just kept that momentum going."

"Any time you beat somebody 14-0, especially in the playoffs without losing a match, that's a good thing."

Leading the pack for the Huskies is a unique brother/sister duo, senior Joseph Mayfield and Savana.

"It's a blessing to have the opportunity to play with my family member," said Savana Mayfield. "We do have our on and off moments, but on the on the court we have learned to put it aside and to just play together because we know each other is thinking and we can communicate without saying many words. And it's just so much fun because it's our last year that we're going to be able to do this."

"You know it's unique to have a brother/sister combination on the team," Gregg said. "I think it's the first time I've had a brother and sister on my team. They're both great kids, outstanding kids and they're both great players. Joseph didn't lose a match all fall in district, he hasn't lost a match all year. He continued to win in the playoffs. Savana is playing really well for us right now at the number one position. It's cool to see them out there playing mixed doubles out there together."

"My family loves it that they can just watch one court and not have to go back and forth watching our different doubles matches," Mayfield said.

Gregg believes his team can compete against any team in the state.

And with that, they take home Team of the Week honors!

"I never would've thought 5 years ago that we would've received this award, but the kids deserve it, they've earned it," said Gregg. "We have a lot of energy, good energy right now going on around the team. It's really exciting to receive this award around the whole area because I know there's a lot of other teams that are doing well."
