Team of the Week: Holliday Eagles

HOLLIDAY - The Holliday Eagles were undefeated, when they took on Iowa Park in a non-district matchup last month.

They lost more than the game that night. They also lost their starting nose guard, center, and quarterback Jett Johnson to injury.

Running back Justin Jones said it's strange not having his close friend on the field with him.

"I'm sad, yeah," said Jones. "I'm really sad. It's a little different. He's got a lot of high energy. It gets us motivated throughout the game."

"Unfortunately injury is a part of the game," said head coach Frank Johnson. "He'll get better, all the kids will get better. We're going to carry on. We put a sticker in the front of our hat to remind us of the boys that are hurt that would love to be out with those guys on Friday nights. I think that means a lot to those boys."

Coach Johnson said the loss provides a lesson for his team.

"For us to get to the goals where we want to be, like a lot of teams we want to make the playoffs, we want to win a district championship, we want to win playoff games," Johnson said. "For us to do that we feel like we had to play a good non-district schedule. Every week we tried to play, what I consider, a better opponent."

"We come back home after a loss with our tail between our legs, and the kids got after it. They responded well and I don't know if you can get redemption from for any loss, but that first district win is always the hardest. And we felt like to get where we want to be, we had to win it."

The Eagles won big in their first district matchup against Nocona, dominating on both sides of the ball, even with the loss of three key players.

"Our defense came up big early, we caused fumbles, we caused turnovers, I think we took the ball away from them five times," said Johnson.

And when the offense took over, they were explosive, with Jones rushing for nearly 300 yards and 4 touchdowns in the 1st half.

"We didn't treat it as redemption," said Jones. "We felt that it's the first step to a district championship."

"It's a prestigious honor," Johnson said. "It ranks right up there with being the Hot Dog Eating Champion of North Texas. It's always great to get accolades, the kids and coaches get way too much credit when you win. I'm glad to see the kids get some recognition."

"We feel like we work hard enough to get it every week, but we finally got it this week." said Jones.

The Eagles take on City View Friday night at Veterans Field.
