The Notre Dame Knights have won eleven straight games. A tough non-district schedule, facing teams like Electra and Archer City, prepared the Knights for what they believe will be a deep playoff run for the first time in a while.
After getting knocked out in the first round of the playoffs last year, expectations were set high for the Notre Dame Knights this season. With a strong returning core, this year's Knights entered the season with confidence.
"We all knew we had it in us to go undefeated in district, and here we are," says senior, Clayton McElroy.
Expectations were met, the Knights went undefeated in district play, and now they're district champs. The team is led by senior, Dylan Smith, averaging in double digits. But there are multiple guys on the court who can shoot. Usually, at least three Knights will finish the game with double digits on their stat line.
Head coach, Jason McCoy says, "We have guys that step up at random times. We got our big guys that come through and get rebound after rebound when we need them to...we're deep in regards to not all of them shoot the ball well, but they all have a specific role they buy in to. But Dylan, Clayton, Sam, and Marc, they all lead the way shooting wise, and they're not afraid to pull the trigger."
Coach McCoy is having fun this year. Almost as much fun as the bench, who have named themselves "Jason's Deli."
"The bench guys, we have a lot of guys, we don't have a big JV schedule, and these guys have fun, regardless if I tell them to or not. So I told them to get something together for the bench. Name themselves, have celebrations for three pointers, charges, loose balls, whatever, and Jacob, one of our sophomores, came together rallied up, they have have all kinds of stuff they do. I don't even see half of it sometimes, they go nuts on the bench and I love it."
Jason and the Deli are looking toward a deep playoff run. And eleven straight wins? That's a good way to start.
