Flores Leads Team at Rust Busting Mustang Open

BURKBURNETT, Texas -- Senior Ashley Flores highlighted a solid start to the outdoor season Thursday afternoon in the MSU Mustang Open at the Burkburnett High School Sports Complex.

"We got what we needed out of it," MSU coach Koby Styles said. "It was a relaxed atmosphere, but we got a lot of out of it. I was really excited about how we competed in the 1,500. We got better today."

Flores paced a season opening time of 4:46.78 to lead a trio of MSU runners to break the 5-minute mark followed by junior Cristina Alcantar (4:56.50) and junior Michelle Krezonoski (4:59.47).

Alcantar, Melody Caldwell, Danielle Chavarria and Maranda Rodriguez set a new school record in the 4x400-meter relay clocking a time of 4:17.93 as the Mustangs raced four teams.

C.J. Frizzell, Janel Campbell, Kim Krezonoski and Maira Salinas took second with a time of 4:25.89 followed by Flores, Brittany Adams, Michelle Krezonoski and  Cara Mack (4:34.50) while Emma Ramirez, Gabby Ruiz, Abigail Gonzalez and Carrie Finson claimed fourth (4:40.67).

Midwestern State competes in Rice's 31st Victor Lopez Classic next weekend in Houston.
