The Midwestern State softball team isn't used to losing. Since 2004 they have seven NCAA postseason appearances, including a trip to the national semifinal in 2011.
2012 however wasn't kind to the Mustangs, finishing the season just one game above 500 and missing out on postseason play altogether, but with a new cast of freshman pitchers, and a balanced offense that's notched 7 consecutive run rule victories, the mustangs are back to their winning ways.
Anyone who has ever played a sport will tell you losing isn't fun. But winning, you know, like fourteen of your last fifteen games well that is, according to MSU senior Elena Bennett, "awesome, i mean a lot better than last year." Senior Carey Campbell agrees,"it's really nice winning all these games. It's a blast to be out there, especially since we all get along. I think that's part of why we're winning because we're all getting along and working together as a team"
Awesome is a perfectly apt way to describe how the mustangs have been playing. In fact, they've been playing so well that they haven't even had to play a seventh inning, in seven games.
Courtney Bingham is one of MSU's veteran seniors "Our offense is probably one of the better one's out here. That's what we really focus on i think. Our pitching has really come together these past few games. Coach carol has really worked hard with them. But you can't downplay what the pitchers do they put in a lot of hard work. And they're a freshman too so they've got a lot to learn but they're doing so well i'm so proud of everyone right now."
The mustangs already have a no hitter this season out of freshman pitcher Laci Belovsky. And their other freshman pitcher Kat Batey threw just the fifth perfect game in MSU softball history. And if that wasn't enough, the mustangs bats have been hot. Five of the mustangs starters batting over 450 on the season. And according to Bingham, "you can't pitch around any of us. If one of us isn't on then the other person is so we've all got good strokes. We're just all seeing the ball right now."
With a 3-and-0 start to their conference schedule the mustangs feel like they're hitting their just hitting their stride. The seniors on this team know what it's like to get get to the big dance. And Elena Bennett says there's no doubt that's where they want to end up, "Nationals is expected. We don't put it past anybody. We've been there we want to do it again, we want to go back. I think the freshman see how excited we are about winning and how excited we are about going to nationals that i think they put that in their mindset too that it's possible and we really want to go."
First step....keep doing what they're doing...Simple as that...
