April 2013 will go down as the fourth coldest April for Wichita Falls with an average temperature for the month of 59.3F which is more than three degrees below normal. Compare that to April of last year when the average temperature was 68.1 degrees, over five degrees above normal.
Several temperature records were broken for the month:
April 3: Record coldest high temperature of 45F
April 10: Record coldest high temperature of 47F
April 19: Record low temperature of 33F
April 23: Record low temperature of 36F
April 24: Record low temperature of 29F
April 25: Record low temperature of 38F
The record low set on April 24th also set the record for the latest freeze to occur in Wichita Falls since records began. The old record was April 15, 1983. Along with below normal temperatures, April finished with slightly below normal rainfall.
A persistent trough over the eastern two-thirds of the US has allowed for unusually strong cold fronts to move down from Canada and the pattern shows no signs of changing in the near future. The one-month temperature outlook by the Climate Prediction Center forecasts temperatures to remain below normal for most of Texas with equal chances of seeing normal, above normal, or below normal
