Archer City's New Economic Development Coordinator Makes Big Plans

A Texoma town that's been the back drop for two movies is trying to put itself back on the map.
A Texoma town that's been the back drop for two movies is trying to put itself back on the map.

Archer City's Visitor Center has reopened and has a new Economic Development Coordinator who has some big plans to bring tourism back to the town where he was raised.

Sam Welch has already planned a new festival for Archer City and he says it's just the start to a legacy he hopes he can leave for generations to come.

The streets of Archer City haven't changed much over the years, and some residents say that's the appeal.

The iconic town square where Texasville and The Last Picture Show were filmed, is now home to the visitor center, hoping to attract tourists again.

“Just getting our name out to anybody that will help us out to get things going,” says Welch.

And part of getting the word out is a new, aggressive social media campaign that includes a new website and Facebook page.

Welch hopes the social media push will help get citizens more involved.

“We ask them questions and they're giving us good answers, good feed back so we're gonna keep digging down and going,” says Welch.

Welch says if people take pride in their city and work together to make it a better place, it will be more likely to keep growing.

“A lot of businesses in other towns that are closing of course we have the same thing here, businesses closing, we need to keep those businesses that we have here sustained with tourism that we can try to get back into the town,” says Welch.

A town he says has too much rich history to be ignored.

“Larry Mcmurtry being from here and two movies being produced and shot here, Angela Kinsey as well, there is a lot of history in this town that people just don't know about,” says Welch.

One of the new events this year will a wild hog cook-off festival.

It will raise money for local volunteer fire departments and will help restore one of Archer City's firetrucks.

That will take place on March 8th.
