Senator Tom Coburn announced Thursday that he will retire at the end of the current session of Congress. The 65 year old Senator from Oklahoma has been battling prostate cancer, but he says his health has nothing to do with his decision to step down.

Coburn was elected to the Senate back in 2004. His current term was scheduled to end in 2016. Coburn's retirement triggers a special election for the United States Senate seat he now holds. The special election will be held on the same dates as Oklahoma's regularly scheduled elections.

The primary will be june 24; a potential runoff election would be held on August 26; and the general election will occur on November 4.
