Cold Temperatures Cause Increase in Water Main Breaks

The cold temperatures have been creating some extra work for city crews.

Wichita Falls' Operations Manager Daniel Nix says the number of water main breaks has doubled in the last week due to the freezing temperatures.

Nix says they usually see between 15 and 20 leaks each week, but last week they had 47.

Wednesday, dozens of families did not have water due to a main break along Taft Boulevard.

And this past weekend businesses in Parker Square had to close early due to a main break in their parking lot.

Both of those leaks have now been fixed.

He says the winter weather makes working on water mains more difficult because equipment can freeze but workers are used to dealing with inclement weather.
