2014 Friday Night Football Preview: Quanah Indians
When Jason Sims became Quanah's head football coach in 2010, he changed the culture of the program.
What was once a strong, respected program fell on hard times.
In 2008 and 2009, the Indians had losing records and missed the playoffs.
Enter Sims and in 4 seasons as head coach, the Indians record was 29-20 with 4 playoff appearances.
Jason Sims, Quanah head football coach-"Its fun. Success breeds success. I have been here long enough to coach these guys in junior high they work hard. You see a lot more kids coming out. We are excited to have all of these kids out here."
Clay Robertson, Quanah senior quarterback and strong safety-"It has been very special. Coach Sims has completely turned this program around. Before he came it was run down. The athletes really didn't want to be a part of it. He came it and made it very exciting for us. We are appreciative of what he has done.
The mentality of the program is just win baby.
If Quanah wants to continue to win and make a deep run in the playoffs, Coach Sims says improvement must be made on the defensive side of the ball.
In 2013, the offensive was great averaging 30 points a game.
But on defense, the Indians gave up 35 points a game.
Hence the need for changes.
Robertson-"We worked hard on 7 on 7. We were working on our coverage with man and zone. We wanted to make our defensive line stronger. We got in the weight room. We got stronger and trying to get better every single day."
Sims-"We struggled on defense last year. We were not very good. We had a hard core season. We kinda refined some things we were doing. We are going to personnel some things differently to get more speed. On the field. That is our point of emphasis. We were called out by a lot of publications about being bad on defense. We are going take it as a personal challenge to get better."
Quanah will get a test to see if there is some improvement with their defense.
The Indians have a tough non-district schedule that begins August 29th at home against City View.
