All Clear Given after Active Shooter Exercise at Sheppard AFB Causes Confusion

An active shooter training exercise at Sheppard has caused confusion throughout the city of Wichita Falls.
Wichita Falls, TX-- Sheppard Air Force Base officials say what started off as an active shooter exercise planned for Thursday afternoon turned into a real world situation after Sheppard officials got an emergency call of shots fired from outside of the controlled exercise area.

Tech Sergeant Mike Meares says they were expecting a simulated 911 call from the drill area, but after they received a call from outside of the controlled area, the exercise was terminated and emergency crews responded to the scene of the emergency call as "real world."

TSgt Meares says they are 99.5% sure the sound of shots heard outside of the controlled area came from outside of the base when a contractor started operating a jackhammer.

WFISD Public Information Officer Renae Murphy tells us nothing happened at Sheppard Elementary School.

She says all doors were locked to ensure staff and student safety.

According to police reports, there were as many as 25 sheriff and police units on base.

A little after 3:30 pm, the all-clear was given for all operations to return to normal. No injuries were reported and there was never any shooter on base.
