There will be an open house coming up at Altus Air Force Base, but this one is about a possible expansion of that base's mission.
A public drop-in open house is now set for April 9 for comments and input on the possible designation of both the training base, and the operating base for the new KC-46A tanker.
The hearing will be arranged as a come and go format for written and recorded comments. It will be 5 to 8 p.m. on April 9 at the Southwest Technology Center in Altus. Altus is one of two bases under consideration as the location for the training unit, and one of four under consideration for the location of the actual operating base.
Competition to house the new plane and support unit was one of the most intense in years, involving 54 bases. A final decision will be made in the spring of next year. The KC tankers will be the next generation of Air Force tankers, supplementing the aging workhorse of the Air Force tanker fleet, the KC-135.
