In what the Air Force Times called the most intense competitions in years, Altus Air Force Base has been named the training base for the Air Force's new KC46-A tanker.

Altus had made the cut to the final two finalists bases, from an original list of 54 bases competing to be named the training base or the active duty base.

McConnell Air Force Base in Kansas was selected as the first active duty main operating base. Altus and McConnell were competing to become the training base, and Altus was among 4 bases making the final list competing to become the operating base.

The new KC46-A "Pegasus" will not mean a total phase out of the remaining 400 KC-135 "strato tankers."

These tankers will continue to fly and be upgraded until all the KC46's are phased in. The first KC46's will arrive sometime in 2016.
