Changes are coming to Altus Air Force Base as the installation held a ground-breaking ceremony Thursday morning for the new training facilities for the Air Force's next generation tanker refueler.

Two new training centers and a maintenance facility will be added to handle the training mission for the new KC-46A Pegasus. Altus was also among 4 bases making the final list competing to become the operating base which went to McConnell Air Force Base in Kansas.

The new KC46-A Pegasus will not mean a total phase out of the air force's remaining 400 KC-135 Strato Tankers. These tankers will continue to fly and be upgraded until all the KC46's are phased in. The first KC46's will arrive sometime in 2016.
