This week, the Austin Independent School District is becoming the second in Texas to offer domestic partner benefits. This change will impact unmarried heterosexual and same-sex couples.
Pflugerville ISD, became the first school district in the state to offer domestic partner benefits. Austin ISD says they aren't here to judge and welcome everyone who walks through their gates for who and what they are. But some critics can't separate the insurance issue from a bigger social argument, gay marriage. Some parents worry about the example it sets for their children.
"It's unnatural, so there wouldn't be any reason for us to put up with it. What we're doing is we're encouraging it," said a parent.
The district says it will probably cover about 200 people and cost around $600,000.
