Hundreds of ice cream sandwiches from a famous Texas-based creamery helped celebrate a WFISD teacher's success in the classroom.

Lori Pitts, a fourth grade reading teacher at West Foundation Elementary School, is the regional finalist for Texas Teacher of the Year.

Blue Bell congratulated her today by treating her school's students and staff to an ice cream party.

Pitts has been a WFISD teacher since 1992 when she started teaching at Sheppard Elementary.

She's taught at West Foundation since it opened in 1996.

Pitts says she was inspired to become a teacher when she was a teenager because she didn't have a legal parent or guardian and was nearly forced to dropout of high school.

She says someone believed in her and made sure she could continue to go to school and earn her diploma.

"That's why I became a teacher because your ability to believe in somebody can have a profound effect on who they become and shape their future," Pitts says.

According to the program's website, the Texas Teacher of the Year winner will be announced next month.
