Bowie Fundraising to Build World's Largest Bowie Knife

A fundraising campaign kicked off today in Bowie that is expected to bring the city the world's largest Bowie knife.
A fundraising campaign kicked off Thursday in Bowie that is expected to make the city a world record holder.

The Bowie Chamber of Commerce launched its Bowie Knife Memorial Project during Thursday's Bowie Connections luncheon.

The project is expected to result in the world's largest Bowie knife. Chamber officials say they've pondered the project for a while.

However, after contacting Guinness World Record officials, they started moving full steam ahead and contacted a Wichita Falls cutting business.

"Took about six months. They had the worlds largest kitchen knife and worlds largest pocket knife but no Bowie knife so we thought, hey, lets take a shot at this," says Bryan Brown with the Bowie Chamber of Commerce.

"This knife is going to be in excess of 20 feet.  The blade is gonna be made out of stainless steel.  The handle will be wood and the hilt will be brass," says Albert Schlabs, of A.S.A.P. Abrasive Waterjet Cutting Services.

Chamber officials say the monument will be in Pelham Park. The project is expected to cost $170,000, so fundraising efforts are now underway. You can help in chamber's fundraising efforts by clicking on the following link:
