Briley Hostas Takes Next Step

Briley Hostas has been fighting leukemia for the last few years. Then last month, she was in a horrible car wreck, but Briley is moving forward.
With her shoes laced up and a firm grip on her new walker, Briley Hostas is taking the next step in her recovery.

"They said it would take about 6-8 weeks for her to start healing," said Alicia Hostas, Briley's mother, "she started walking in 6 weeks, so she's right on track."

A car wreck last month left Briley with two broken legs and a broken pelvis.

All while she was still going through chemo-therapy treatments.

She now has metal rods in each leg, but she's healing.

In fact she's feeling so well, she recently enjoyed a day at the zoo as well.

Briley recalls what she enjoyed the most at the zoo, "the giraffes, elephants, cheetahs, and we also we saw a shark."

"It's been nice just to be able to be a family, and for her to be a kid," explained Alicia, "that's the main thing, just to be normal."

Something else normal little girls do, celebrate birthdays.

Two weeks ago, Briley turned five.

"We played pin-the-lips-on the frog, and princess fishing, and princess treasure dig," said Briley, smiling from ear to ear.

For her, the party was a chance to make up for missed time with friends.

For her parents, it was another example of how Briley's infectious love for life helps lift the spirits of those who hear her story.

"She's kind of taught us all a lot about just living day to day," said Alicia, "and she's taught us that when things happen you just have to keep going."

And that's exactly what Briley plans to do, keep going, until the days of wheelchairs and walkers are behind her.

Reporter's notes by Ryan Robertson:

Despite having to briefly stop her cancer treatments due to her injuries, doctors said Briley's leukemia is still in remission, and she should be through with her chemo-therapy treatments in the spring. is still on track to being cancer free within a year.
