Cameron Employees Receiving Help From Wichita Falls Organizations

More than 120 employees laid off after Electra's biggest employer closed its doors for good over the weekend are now on the job hunt.
More than 120 employees laid off after Electra's biggest employer closed its doors for good over the weekend are now on the job hunt.

Cameron Oil Tank and Equipment Manufacturing former employees are getting some help from Wichita Falls organizations.

Workforce Solutions along with the Chamber of Commerce have hosted a job fair and provided information about unemployment insurance benefits, opportunities for retraining and possible jobs in other businesses.

On Tuesday, Workforce Solutions Executive Director Mona Statser says Congress has certified the closure of Cameron as Trade Act affected.

Statser says Cameron was able to prove one of the reasons for the plant's closure was because some of the duties were being moved offshore.

She says the Trade Act eligibility will provide additional funding and services.

"We know we're not too worried about the welders," Statser says. "It's the other personnel we hope we'll be able to secure other jobs but again, if they're not able to, we hope they'll take advantage of the services and retraining for another occupation."

In addition, Henry Florsheim, Wichita Falls Chamber of Commerce President, says he has witnessed Cameron employees take advantage of the resources that are available to them.

"It's a great opportunity for somebody to hit a new field, to learn a new job, a new industry if they're interested in it but we're real comfortable that everybody out there was working, that wants to keep working; they'll be able to find a job somewhere else," Florsheim says.

Florsheim says he's heard of other manufacturers already hiring Cameron employees.

Also, he says as soon as Cameron is ready, the chamber is going to help the City of Electra market the facility to hopefully get another business in there.
