Canadian Company Acquires Clay Co. Wind Farm Project

Clay County will soon see some of its landscape housing dozens of wind turbines.
Archer, Baylor, Hardeman, Young and several other Texoma counties are speckled with wind turbines as wind farms continue to pop up everywhere.

And now Clay County will soon see some of its landscape housing dozens of wind turbines, as well.

Horn Wind, out of the Dallas area, has spent the past several years getting a five square mile area of land in southwest Clay County ready for a wind farm. Monday, Clay County officials announced what company has taken over that land so construction can begin.

The announcement came on the Clay County Courthouse lawn that Alterra Power Corporation, headquartered in Canada, has acquired the Shannon-1 Wind Project from Horn Wind, a North Texas early-stage wind developer.

"We spent the last 5 years on this getting it all together and now it's ready to move into financing," says Jimmy Horn, president of Horn Wind, LLC.

Alterra will soon build a 200 Megawatts wind farm in southwest Clay County.

"Think it starts right there and goes straight over to there.  That's correct.  And, from right there straight down.  It's a five mile square," explains Clay County Judge Kenneth Liggett.

Clay County officials say this project is a big deal.

"It's a $250-million project to start with and a possibility of ending up over $300-million project.  There are some tax abatements.  Payments in lieu of taxes... incentives to get this Horn Wind Energy to where they could afford to begin production and as they swap and trade it to Alterra they will still be in effect," Judge Liggett adds.

Clay County officials say the Shannon-1 Wind Project will create up to 60 construction jobs and once it is up and running, about eight full-time jobs.

Last week, Alterra made a $4.5 million cash deposit with Oncor to transmit power from the wind farm, which shows progress on this project is slowly but surely underway.
