Consumer Reports has some tips to keep your holiday from going up in smoke.

First, inspect all lights every year, and toss any which are frayed, have gaps in insulation, or damaged sockets.

Only use lights approved by an independent testing laboratory.

Connect no more than three light strands together, and check the wires periodically to make sure they're not hot.

Use indoor and outdoor lights in the appropriate places.
