Colonel: New Ejection Seats, Technology Saved Pilots' Lives

Colonel Lance Bunch says the T-38 aircraft involved in a Friday morning crash was equipped with the latest technology.

Sheppard Air Force Base officials say their aircraft have the latest technology and that helped ensure the Friday morning T-38 crash wasn't worse.

They say that technology kept the two pilots on board alive.

The T-38 involved in the crash was recently upgraded with new ejection seats from Martin Baker.

Those seats allow a wider safety range for the aircraft and the crew.

That new technology, they say, made all the difference in this situation.

Officials says they're thankful this aircraft was one that was recently updated.

Colonel Lance Bunch, commander of the 80th Flying Training Wing, says, "When commanded by the pilot, the two seats are sequenced so that the pilot ejects first, and then a short delay later, the front cockpit students ejects also.  Then the seat comes out and depending on the altitude above the ground is how quick their parachute deploys."

Colonel bunch says in this case, the pilots' parachutes deployed quickly and they were able to land safely, sustaining only minor injuries.
