Jury selection got underway today, and may continue tomorrow, in the trial of a long- time Duncan doctor charged with shooting his ex-wife's boyfriend at the woman's home exactly one year ago today.
54 Year old Oscar Morales is charged with one count of assault and battery with a deadly weapon. According to police, Morales was bringing his children back to his ex-wife's home and her 57 year old boyfriend was in the garage. The affidavit states Morales' son had a stuffed animal his father had given him, and the boyfriend told him to give it back to his dad, sparking an argument in front of the couple's two young children. Police say morale's ex wife got between the two men, but Morales reached around her and fired one shot with a 9 millimeter handgun into the lower part of the other man's body.
Then, when police arrived, they say Morales was giving emergency medical treatment to the shooting victim. Pretrial motions indicate morales will argue the shooting was justified, and was self defense.
