Flag Lowering Ceremonies for Closing Schools will Take Place Friday

Alamo Elementary, Sam Houston Elementary, Zundy Jr. High and will close for good on Friday with flag lowering ceremonies.
This is the last week of school for students in Wichita Falls public schools and four of the schools will lower their flags for the last time on Friday at a flag lowering ceremony open to the public.

Those schools are Barwise and Zundy Junior High, as well as Alamo and Sam Houston elementary schools.

Renae Murphy with the Wichita Falls Independent School District says this is a bittersweet time for these historical schools, but there is excitement for change.

"It's just a time to reflect, but to look forward and seize the opportunity that is ahead of us as those schools combine," Murphy says.

Consolidation and new names will come for these schools this summer and the public is invited to look back to the history of the schools, and remember good times during the flag ceremony on Friday.

"The flag ceremonies are an important time to recognize the important service that these buildings have done in our community. Thousands of children have gone through them. And the situation of two of our elementary schools have served our community for over 100 years," Murphy says.

That would be Alamo and Sam Houston elementary schools. Murphy says as the community says goodbye to these schools as well as Zundy and Barwise Junior High, it is not a permanent goodbye.

"It is an opportunity for us to reflect on the bricks and mortar, but the real school and the home and the feeling of school are really the staff members and the students and those things will go with them to the consolidated schools," Murphy says.

Murphy says there are no plans yet for the future use of the Zundy, Alamo and Houston buildings, as Zundy and Barwise will combine into one school in the previous Barwise building, but the hope is that they will be used within the school district or the community.

The flag lowering ceremonies this Friday are open to the public.

The ceremony at Barwise will take place at 9 a.m., Alamo's will be at 10 a.m., Zundy's will take place at 11:15 a.m., and Sam Houston will conclude the ceremonies at noon.
