2014 Friday Night Football Preview Henrietta Bearcats
A run of 9 straight playoff appearances came to an end in 2012 when the Henrietta Bearcats surprisingly missed the playoffs with 2-8 mark.
Fast forward to 2013, Henrietta clawed their way back into the playoffs after a strong finish to the season.
The Bearcats advancing to the area round was good for the team.
But this year the goal is to finish strong in district play and go deeper in the playoffs.
Byron West, Henrietta head football coach-"We gotta be a dominant team this year. We did things last year that we didn't know or people expect us to do last year. But we have to finish the race."
Cody Fletcher, Henrietta senior running back-"Finishing is the most important thing. Pretty much every game in district within a touchdown. We finished good but we want to be on top."
To meet the goal of finishing on top, the Bearcats are going to have to do it with a mix of youth and experience.
Henrietta returns 7 starters on offense and 6 starters on defense.
Fletcher-"That last lost was real motivation. We were not really expecting that after coming off the first round loss. It hurt us real bad. So we came up here this summer to work hard."
Henrietta gets to work hard in preparation for the new season on some new turf.
The Bearcats join several other teams in our area with an artificial surface.
West-"Turf is great for our kids and the safety of our kids. Of course when it ever does rain. When ever we do get one of those floods we are able to get out here and get our work done. So it is very nice for our community to take pride in and be around."
No question, the Henrietta Bearcats are in a tough district.
But the team embraces the challenge.
Fletcher-"They put us a pretty tough district this year. It is for the best i think. It will make us work harder. We have a bunch of people coming in during the summer and out here on two a days."
West-"It's good for us. If we do get through and get into the playoffs, we are going to see those guys down the road. It is going to be pretty late when we see them. If we play with these guys we can play with anybody and with people around the state."
The Henrietta Bearcats open up the season on their new home turf August 29th against Electra.
