FNF Preview: Newcastle, Woodson, Gold-Burg, Forestburg (2013)

Tonight we preview 6 man District 11D-II. The Newcastle Bobcats, Woodson Cowboys,
On day two of our friday night football previews we'll stay in the six man ranks with district 11 division-2. This district comprised of Newcastle, Woodson, Gold Burg, and Forestburg. The Forestburg Longhorns have made the playoffs every other year since 2009. Last year was the year they came up short, finishing out the season 0-and-9. But first year head coach Wayne Tuckwell, who's won a state championship with Northside and helped start the program at St. Jo, says the pieces are in place for this year's team to compete in their district. "I'm in with a pretty good powerhouse with Newcastle. We've got Woodson in there but i feel confident. With the guys that are coming, with the guys that I've had come back from last year. I feel confident that if they'll buy in and work hard we can compete with them."

Some of the confidence comes thanks to a few key returners, Senior QB Tristen Hill was first team all district on offense and second team on defense last year, along with hill running back Malachi Moore and defensive lineman Nate Shepard who were both second team all district as freshman. Full back Bryan McDowell also joined his teammates as a second team selection.

Next up in district 11-D2 is Gold Burg. After a 2-and-8 season and losing first team all district running back Zach Ingram, the Bears are looking to start this season strong. With James Cantwell at quarterback and Timmy Metz catching passes, they could do just that. Both Metz and Cantwell were 1st team all district last year. And in addition to catching passes. According to coach Stephen Conner, Metz has taken up recruiting, "he's been taking the ball and going with it after i i told him he needed to step up and be a leader since he's one of our two seniors that we have this year and he's been going with it and i think that's the reason we have a lot of people coming out this year cause he's been recruiting, trying to get the bodies we have to come out and play."

Picked to finish second in the district by Texas Football magazine is Woodson. The Cowboys coming off a 7-and-4 season after making it to the district finals. The cowboys have improved each of the last three years. And bring back running back Brandon Arellano who was responsible for 1200 all purpose yards and 26 touchdowns last season. Head coach Richard Sullivan says Arellano is key to their success, "he's gonna be a very big asset for us he should be the heart and soul of this team. He's the one that's coming back with a good amount of playing experience. He's gonna be a team leader for us and we're going to revolve around him..."

Also back for the cowboys is Bobby Aguero. Who in only four games last season rushed for 223 yards and 4 Touchdowns. Look out for him along with Derrick Robles who had 7 touchdowns last year.

Picked to win the district is 11-D2 powerhouse Newcastle, who returns all state running back and defensive district MVP in Tyler Mays, who ran for 765 yards and 12 TD's along with passing for 427 yards and 5 scores. Mays able to do all this while missing four games with injury. And after making it to the state semifinals two years ago and the quarter finals last year, Mays says the bobcats are ready to go for it all, "we got that close and the year before we went to the semifinals now its time to go to state...We're hungry for it...We want it bad." Assistant coach JT Ely says this year it's all about the seniors, "Tyler Mays, Nathan Wilson, Sean Osbourne, Will Lewis, Hunter McBride, that's a big core that we're going to depend upon a lot this year to continue what we did last year and take it to the next level..."  Both Nathan Wilson and Sean Osborn, Jr. Were first team all district in 2012 on offense, and second team all district on defense, giving the bobcats solid returners on both sides of the ball and a solid chance to make it to state.
