Funds Pour in for Australian Baseball Player's Family

They say this tight knit community of Duncan always takes care of their own and the girlfriend of the Australian Baseball player murdered Friday, Sarah Harper, and her family are now taking all that support in.

Sarah originally agreed to interview with us, but after some unfortunate circumstances and the intense media attention, she declined shortly after we arrived. But her brother, Tyler, spoke for her and others and shared things that make Lane's death a terrible loss.

“I'll miss the way he makes my sister smile. I will miss my random golf partner even though he just picked it up when he met her. Terrible golfer, never played before,” Tyler Harper said.

The impact of Lane's death is clear. Not only has this community pitched in with local fundraisers but the effort has taken the internet by storm.

Just two days ago a fund was organized to raise money for Lane's father to travel to the US.

With over 1800 donations, more than $70,000 has been raised, greatly surpassing the original goal.

In Duncan, actions of love continue.

“My heart just kept telling me you need to do something, you know what can you do what can you do, and it just fell into place,” said Soyna Hill, a resident of Duncan.

Hill's son went to high school with Sarah and has now put together a 5K run in Lane's memory.

She said Lane's death is hard for her to swallow.

“That could have been my son, he runs down that same road all the time,” she said.

But it wasn't her son. It was Chris Lane.

“People who would have even met him for an hour would have known they wished they were half the man he was. He was that kind of a guy,” said Harper.

A young man who has now captured the hearts of people all over the world.

The 5K will be held on September 2nd on what would have been Lane's 23rd birthday.
