The Civil War drama "Lincoln" was first among equals at this morning's Golden Globe nominations, picking up seven overall including Best Drama, Best Director for Steven Spielberg and acting honors for Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones and Daniel Day Lewis.
"Lincoln" competition for Best Drama includes the real life Iran hostage tale "Argo", as
well as the pre-Civil War bounty hunter tale, "Django Unchained".
The Osama Bin Laden manhunt saga "Zero Dark Thirty" is also a Best Drama contender, as is the fantastical shipwreck story "Life of Pi".
The battle for Best Musical or Comedy is expected to be a two film race between "Les
Miserables" and the offbeat romance "Silver Linings Playbook".
Each film received four nominations overall.
"My hunch is that Les Miserables will probably win because it's the grander of the two films, and that's what the Hollywood foreign press, who votes on the Golden Globes, usually likes," predicts Fandango chief correspondent Dave Karger.
Three other films will hope for an upset in the Best Musical or Comedy category---"Best Exotic Marigold Hotel", the first love tale "Moonrise Kingdom" and the quirky romance "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen".
In the acting categories, Denzel Washington's performance in the drama "Flight" makes him one of Day-Lewis' rivals for Best Actor in a Drama.
Also in the chase are Richard Gere for "Arbitrage", John Hawkes for "The Sessions" and Joaquin Phoenix for "The Master".
"Zero Dark Thirty's" Jessica Chastain is among the nominees for Best Actress in a Drama,
along with Naomi Watts for "The Impossible", Rachel Weisz for "The Deep Blue Sea", Helen Mirren
for "Hitchcock" and Marion Cotillard for "Rust and Bone".
The awards will be handed out January 13th.
NBC's "Smash" was among the Golden Globe nominees this morning for Best TV Musical or Comedy,
along with "Modern Family", "Girls", "Episodes" and "The Big Bang Theory".
Best TV Drama nominees include "Boardwalk Empire", "Breaking Bad", "Downton Abbey", "The Newsroom" and last fall's Best Drama Emmy winner, "Homeland".
