Today was not the greatest day to be outside, but that did not stop some Quanah students from becoming one with nature.

About 70 pre-k and kindergartners from Reagan Elementary enjoyed a field trip to River Bend Nature Center here in Wichita Falls.

Little ones learned about bugs, roadrunners and other native animals.

During a time when budget cuts are forcing many schools to cut field trips, this student field trip was funded through Alcoa Howmet's "STEM Ecology grant.

Last year, the grant was $15,000, but this year, River Bend Nature Center officials say it was increased to $33,000, an amount that is allowing River Bend to extend this program to more school districts outside of Wichita County.
