Hail Slams Waurika Lake Marina

Campers and volunteers from nearby towns helped patch up holes and repair roofs that were hammered by hail Wednesday night.
North of the Red River, sirens didn't sound the alarm but campers did take cover when hail started pounding Waurika Lake Marina.

Late Thursday afternoon insurance adjusters started totaling hail damage at Waurika Lake Marina but the clean up was already underway.

Campers and volunteers from nearby towns helped patch up holes and repair roofs that were hammered by hail Wednesday night.

Owners say they got word the storm was approaching shortly after 8 p.m.

So they gathered eight of the 18 people on the property in the bathroom, which owners say was the only brick building on site with a sturdy roof.

Owners say the hail started off small and quickly increased in size and sound.

"It was just like, deafening loud.  It was hitting the place where we were and it literally sucked the door of the bathrooms that we were in.. it sucked it closed where we couldn't get out," says Nan Reese, owner of the marina.

Reese says aside from some cuts from broken glass no one was seriously injured.

And while rentals of cabins and campers at the marina are now on hold until they can be repaired Reese says the marina store will remain open for business.
