Interfaith Ministry Director to Retire

Director Jean Payne celebrated her retirement at Grace Church
Wichita Falls will soon say goodbye to a volunteering pillar in the community.

Jean Payne will be retiring after 32 years as the director of Interfaith Ministry.

Interfaith Ministries has been helping families in need since the 1979 tornado.

Jean Payne has helped further the organization's mission for 32 years.

"It warms my heart to know that so many people would come out on a cold rainy like this to greet me and to say thanks and it is very wonderful to feel the love," says Payne.

Sunday she had time to reflect on everything that brought her to the point of her retirement after so many years of volunteer work.

Payne moved to Wichita Falls in 1980, but she didn't come to start doing what many know her for now.

"Actually I was working for Channel 3," says Payne. "I heard that they were opening another non-profit organization and so I applied for that job because that was really more of a bend was to work in some kind of ministry area."

In 1982 she decided to take a leap of faith after only two months of working for Interfaith and apply for the position she would hold for the next 32 years.

"The director quit to take another job so i applied for that job and they took a chance and hired me."

And while Payne will be taking a step back, she has plenty of advice for the next generation of volunteers.

"The benefits of volunteering for organizations like Interfaith Ministries and all the other ones in town will far outweigh anything that you could think of to say no I don't want to do that. Volunteering is such an important thing to keep the structure of our community together," says Payne.

Payne will be the director of Interfaith Ministries for the next month before stepping down.

She plans to still volunteer around the community.

Payne says during retirement, she'll spend time with her husband and will check a few items off the housework and travel lists.
