Lawton Man Pays it Forward to Local Church

A Lawton man missed his turned but ended up finding the pay it forward truck to...

What started out as a wrong turn for Marcus Portley turned out to be a great blessing for a local church in Wichita Falls.

St. Matthew's Baptist Church was built on the corner of California Avenue and Dallas Street more than 90 years ago.

Lawton resident Marcus Portley was on his way to build a desk for the church but accidentally missed his turn, a missed turn that lead him to our "Pay it Forward" truck and gave one local church a huge blessing.

"I figured if you're just putting a small desk together then you probably have a smaller congregation and I'm sure its a charitable institution helping the community...so what better place to give to than those who's helping somebody,” said Marcus Portley, pay it forward winner explaining who he wanted to give the money to.

While it may be a small church there's nothing small about the service members do for the community.

In fact, the church plans on using the three hundred dollars from four stars auto ranch to help local children.

"When he called and said that to me that just hit my spirit and then I knew what God was sayin and I knew that we were getting ready to go back to school drive on August the 9th," said Pastor Doris Smith from St. Matthew's Baptist Church.

St. Matthew's has hosted back- to- school supply and clothing drives for almost a decade now, giving families everything they need for kids to be ready to start the new school year.

"We have it set up so you can come in and get all clothes you can get..shoes...back packs...school supplies and we just help them get ready for school the next year!" Smith said.

Even though the next drive is still a couple months away, Smith says that this small act of kindness will make a huge impact in the lives of those that come.

"I said we'll take this money and use it so we can give back to the community and to our city," said Pastor Smith.

The thanks that pastor Smith gives comes from more than just her, it comes from all those who will benefit from Marcus and his small but significant act of kindness.
