Tyler Ledford scored his sixth goal of the season, and David Zevnik stopped 21 shots, but the Wichita Falls Wildcats (27-20-4) were foiled in the shootout by the Lone Star Brahmas, 3-2, at the NYTEX Sports Centre on Saturday.

Just as in Friday’s contest, the Wildcats opened the scoring on a power-play goal late in the first period. Off an offensive zone faceoff, Sam Piazza held the puck at the blue line and stepped inside a couple of checks, before throwing the puck softly on net. After caroming around, the puck popped free to Ledford to smash home for his sixth goal of the season.

The Wildcats outshot the Brahmas 11-5 in an increasingly physical second period, but Lone Star managed to find an equalizer against the run of play. Austin Thielges ripped a slapshot off a loose puck that Zevnik could not control, allowing Michael Crowley to poke it home out of the netmouth scrum at 5:33 of the second.

The third period yielded no goals for either team, and for the second-straight night the game headed to overtime.

In the extra session, the Wildcats had multiple opportunities to capture the win, but TJ Black turned aside each effort to send the game to a shootout.

Rudy Junda scored in round one, but Wichita Falls could not beat Black in any of the final four attempts. After Liam Stirtzinger scored in round three for Lone Star, Thomas Aldworth stepped up in round five with a chance to win it for the Brahmas, and beat Zevnik upstairs to give Lone Star the win.

The Wildcats are next in action on Monday, March 10 when they visit the Topeka Roadrunners. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:35,
