Love is Blooming at Horizon Bay

Love was in full bloom for residents at Horizon Bay assisted living home Friday.

Residents received handmade cards and flower arrangements with a little help from their peers and some elementary students.

Each flower arrangement put together at Horizon Bay is a bouquet of love, but not just the kind between couples, it's about making everyone feel thought of.

“They've sent it to someone that they love, so flowers are very very important, they're not just a little thing, that trivial, that's going to die after a little while, people remember the things that you do for them and I think they remember flowers and I hope that they always will,” says Retired Florist and resident Frances Duffy.

Frances Duffy is a retired florist who lives at Horizon Bay, she now teaches a flower arrangement class and delivers bouquets to residents for special occasions, passes on designs made with love, that started with her own love story.. when she told her husband she wanted to open a dress shop.

“He said no, he said look around this house, what's it full of? I said oh furniture with a lot of flowers, he said you love flowers that's what you should do,” says Duffy.

But Duffy isn't the only one putting smiles on residents faces Friday, about a dozen Jefferson Elementary school kids teamed up with the visiting angels program to deliver handmade Valentine's Day cards and pass out candy, hoping no one feels left out on a day set aside to celebrate love.

“It's about being happy being smiling and helping people.”

“Everybody needs to be happy and loved.”

One couple in Horizon Bay, the Collins, have been in love for over 63 years and they say the answer to keeping their romance alive is simple.

“ I think you just have to make up your mind to give and take, forgive,” says Freda Collins.

“Just say yes all the time. Yes mam,” says Jim Collins.

Duffy teaches the flower arrangement class once a week.

All the flowers used in the arrangements are donated by local florist.
