Lucy Park Pool Will Open This Summer Even If Stage 5 Water Restrictions Take Effect

The City of Wichita Falls announced today it will open the Lucy Park swimming pool this summer, even if Stage 5 water restrictions go into effect.

The City of Wichita Falls announced today it will open the Lucy Park swimming pool this summer, even if Stage 5 water restrictions go into effect.
Mechell Dixon spoke with city officials to find out how the city will get the water to keep it filled.

Wichita Falls Parks and Recreation officials say the Lucy Park pool is mostly used by children who have no access to pools in the summer.
And officials say they decided to open the pool so those kids will still have a cool place when the days hit those triple digits.
But to do that means more costs.

Kids have splashed in the Lucy Park pool for 40 years.
Although more stringent water restrictions threatened to dry up this type of fun this summer, Wichita Falls Parks and Recreation officials decided the value of that activity makes it worth the extra cost and work, even if the city elevates to Stage 5 water restrictions.
But with the benefits come cost increases and higher fees for two reasons.

"One is that they haven't been raised for five years and expenses have increased but also the anticipated purchase of water to keep the pool open if we hit Stage 5," says Jack Murphy, director of Wichita Falls Parks and Recreation Department.

Purchased well water will allow crews to refill this pool so kids can have a splashing good time this summer.
And while parks and recreation officials say it would be easier and cheaper to close the pool once Stage 5 restrictions take effect, they felt it's more important to provide kids with a cool, clean summer fun than to lock up this pool.

Here's a look at the new prices for the Lucy Park swimming pool..
The cost will go from $1.75 to $3 for those 18 and older and from $1.50 to $2 for those 17 and younger.
Also, if you want a swim pass, which covers 20 visits, that cost is increasing from $20 to $30.
The pool opens later this month on the following schedule:

Memorial Day Weekend, May 24 - 26

Saturday, May 31st

Sunday, June 1st

Splash Day, June 7th
(Free Admission)

Open Daily
June 8 - August 17
