Man Accused of Theft Arrested after Property Owner Fires Shots

A 48-year-old man is behind bars accused of stealing.
Wichita Falls Police say a downtown shop owner fired shots at a thief who was later arrested several blocks away.

The shots were fired in the 400 block of Indiana Monday morning. Police say the owner of a shop there saw 48 year old Melvis Compton taking property and fired shots from a weapon but did not hit Compton.

Just before noon, police were sent to 7th and Lee, near the Salvation Army building, to check on a possible theft suspect. They arrested Compton there.

Compton is charged with theft under $1500.

He has multiple previous arrests in Wichita County dating back to 1987, including thefts, burglaries, robberies and many more.

Officers say the shop owner was not charged for firing the gun but it is being investigated and will be presented to the grand jury.
