The McNiel drainage project will require demolition at the intersection of Southwest Parkway and McNiel starting Monday.
The first part of the project will be closing in the box culverts at the intersection and building a new turn lane.
The second part will add new drainage boxes under McNiel to help avoid flooding.
It's a project that will really affect drivers and residents in the area but officials say they hope doing the project in 5 phases will help.
“Parts of McNiel at points will be closed for 3-4 months at a time, Southwest Parkway for that first phase for the first 3-4 months, will be closed that further most, the northerly most traveled lane will be closed and there may be periods where the second lane will be closed temporarily,” says Jeff Hill , the city engineer on the project.
The project is expected to last a total of 18 months and will cost about 6 and a half million dollars.
