A routine traffic stop turns into a shootout and a 10 hour manhunt north of Lawton.

It all started just before 11 Thursday night.

Capt. George Brown, spokesperson for OHP, says, "A state trooper working the H.E. Bailey Turnpike stopped a car for a traffic violation. The suspect in that traffic stop took off in his vehicle. A short pursuit ensued."

During the chase, officials say the driver of that vehicle, 19-year-old Kwade Sanderson of Festus, MO, fired shots at the trooper.

"The suspect during the pursuit fired shots, a shot or shots, from a long rifle and the trooper returned fire," Capt. Brown says. "No one was hit in the gunfire. The suspect bailed on foot at the end of the pursuit near Elgin."

That chase ended about 15 miles down the road around mile marker 70: the exit for Elgin.

"The highway patrol set up a loose perimeter and tightened that perimeter late into the night," Capt. Brown says.

That perimeter helped narrow the area in which the suspect was believed to be, but officials say information from an Elgin resident who noticed something strange led to Sanderson's arrest.

"The suspect was spotted this morning about 8:30 by a citizen who directed troopers to his location at an outbuilding near a residential area," Capt. Brown says.

Sanderson was taken into custody without incident.

He's charged with shooting with the intent to kill, pointing firearms, using an offensive weapon in a felony, eluding a police officer, and speeding.

OHP will complete a general shooting investigation, interview the suspect, and look at evidence before turning over the case to the district attorney's office and the D.A. will decide where to take the case from there.
