MSU Student Starts Safe Ride Home Program To Honor Friend

We all hear the dangers of drinking and driving, but did you know someone dies from a crash involving alcohol every 53 minutes?

We all hear the dangers of drinking and driving, but did you know someone dies from a crash involving alcohol every 53 minutes?

Earlier this year an MSU graduate, 23-year-old Kelvin Chazarreta was killed in a rollover accident in northwest Fort Worth.

The driver of the truck has been charged with intoxication manslaughter.

Months later friends of Chazarreta, who went by Chaz, started a sober ride home program in Wichita Falls in his honor.

Chandler Wilkinson says after the death of his friend, he really started to notice that too many people in Wichita Falls don't take cabs home after drinking, so he set out to create a service where everyone can get help and help others.

“Kelvin was a great guy, kelvin didn't know any strangers, you know he was real friendly, smooth talker, you know he was just fun to be around,” says Wilkinson.

Wilkinson says Kelvin Chazaretta was taken too soon and he felt he had to find a way to end the excuses for drinking and driving.

“We go out you know socially have fun, drink whatever and when we lost kelvin, it just got me thinking like, there needs to be something in place, a way to take care of other people, a way to be responsible,” says Wilkinson.

So he started Chaz Cab, a Facebook page that lets people post that they are available for rides or need a ride, all free of charge, Wilkinson says there just needs to be more people helping people.

“It doesn't matter who they are, you are important and you could be a part of saving just one life,” says Wilkinson.

The service continues to grow in popularity, and Wilkinson hopes more people use this potentially life- saving service.

If you want to join Chaz Cab just click on their Facebook page.
