MSU takes 2 in the final day of the Holiday Inn/MSU Invitational

The Mustangs beat Northeastern State 14-2 & Rogers State 5-2.
Chelsey Wall drove in a career-high seven runs to lead Midwestern State to a 14-2 run-rule win over Northeastern State Sunday morning in the Holiday Inn at the Falls Invitational at Mustangs Parks.

The sophomore from Keller crushed her second grand slam in the first inning and stroked a three-run double to center field as the Mustangs scored seven runs in the first and fourth innings to improve to 7-4 on the season.

The Mustangs sent 10 hitters to the plate in the opening frame as Kelley Schaefer, Shelby Carter and Jennifer Quintero had run-scoring singles to set up Wall's second homer of the of the year to cap the seven-run, six-hit inning.

It was Wall's second career grand slam with her first coming in a 17-8 win over Tarleton State on April 13, 2014.

Wall extended her hitting streak to seven games hitting .545 (12-for-22) with doubles and a home run during the streak.

Fellow sophomore Haley Howerton extended her hitting streak to eight games by going 2-for-3 with a pair of bunt singles. She is hitting .552 (16-for-29) during the streak.

Freshman Erin Knox limited the RiverHawks to a pair of runs on six hits with three strikeouts to improve to 3-2 on the season.

The Mustangs sent 12 batters to the plate to put the game away with seven runs and six hits in the fourth inning highlighted Wall's three-run double to go along with a two-run single by Katelyn Vinson and a pinch-hit single by Baylee Voigt.

Kim Jerrick, Howerton, Vinson and Wall paced the Mustangs' 13-hit attack with two hits each.

Northeastern State fell to 2-5 on the season.

Freshman Katlyn Holmes fanned a season-high seven batters to help Midwestern State to a 5-2 win over Rogers State (Okla.) in the finale of the Holiday Inn at the Falls Invitational Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The Mustangs closed the weekend with a 4-1 mark.

The Hillcats (1-4) struck for their only damage on Carley Conley's two-run homer in the fourth inning, but Holmes closed strong to retire 10 of the last 11 batters she faced to move to 3-1 on the season.

Midwestern State jumped out an early lead in the first inning as Kim Jerrick was hit by pitch and moved around the bases on a pair of groundouts before Kelley Schaefer stroked a solid single to right field to give the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage.

The Mustangs took advantage of four Rogers State miscues in the second inning to plate three unearned runs as sophomore Haley Howerton extended her hitting streak to nine games with a single to center field.

Junior shortstop Katy Vandewater led off the third inning with her third homer of the season on a towering shot to center field to give MSU a 5-0 advantage.

RSU's Brooklyne Harbert (0-2) allowed one hit the rest of the way as she allowed two earned runs on four hits and walked four in six innings.

Howerton, Schaefer, Vandewater and Krisha Hamm accounted for the Mustangs' season low hit output of four.

Midwestern State opens the St. Mary's Round Robin with games against Oklahoma Christian and St. Mary's Friday afternoon in San Antonio. First pitches are set for 4 and 6 p.m., respectively.

The Mustangs take on Western Oregon and Central Oklahoma on Saturday before closing tournament play against Rogers State (Okla.) and St. Mary's on Sunday.
