New Airport Terminal Phase Three to Begin in June

If you plan to fly out of Wichita Falls in about 6 months, you could be departing from a brand new terminal building.
If you plan to fly out of Wichita Falls in about 6 months, you could be departing from a brand new terminal building.

Millions of dollars in funding were approved this week to complete phase 3 of construction of the Wichita Falls Regional Airport.

Some local college students were given a full tour of the construction site to help them gain some hands on learning.

The MSU engineering students were applying what they learned in the classroom to how things are done at the construction site. And we've learned the new terminal building is on time or even a little ahead of schedule, even with bad weather delays this winter.

"We are very impressed with the building site and then we can see the future of Wichita Falls Airport," said MSU Engineering Professor Sheldon Wang.

Officials say the future is looking bright as the clear skies are making it easy to get a lot accomplished.

"Everything from plumbing and mechanical and electrical, concrete roofing structural steal, everyone's very busy," Dave Lilley, CEO of Trinity Hughes Construction said.

All that work adds up, as over half the new terminal building is complete.

"We're in the process of actually buttoning up both with windows as well as wall structures and then we will be moving almost completely inside," Lilley explained.

Then in phase 3, they will add on the finishing touches, like extra parking for rental cars, and a new apron. The final part of construction in phase 3 will include demolishing the old terminal and making a quick switch over to the new terminal.

But just because construction is done doesn't mean the terminal can open.

Once we conclude construction. We'll then have to begin the coordination process with the occupants," Lilley said.

That means coordinating with the FAA, American Eagle Airline and TSA to get their inspections done before doors can be opened.

Phase three should start next month. Officials are hoping construction will be complete in November.
