Researchers reveal discovery of new raccoon-sized mammal native to South America.

(NBC News) Researchers introduced a newly discovered mammal species Thursday at the Smithsonian National Museum of History.

The "olinguito" is a small raccoon-sized animal that lives in the mountainous jungles of Ecuador and Colombia.

Scientists have been tracking the olinguito for the past decade and later realized one olinguito had actually been in several American zoos in the 1960s and 70s, mistaken for the closely related olingos.

The female was transferred from zoo to zoo because she refused and couldn't breed with olingos.
