Pioneer Day at Henrietta Elementary

Henrietta Elementary School students get a lesson in Clay County history with their own Pioneer Day.

Tomorrow Clay County will begin its three day Pioneer Reunion celebration.

It's a mix of history, a horse parade, two different float parades and a rodeo.

But today some people in Henrietta got a jump start on the celebration.

Henrietta's Elementary School held its own Pioneer Day.

So not only did students get a history lesson, but they also got the full experience on what life is like on a ranch.

"I thought I would give you another chance to yodel, this song has some yodeling too."

Children gathered round listening and singing cowboy songs that were all about their heritage and about the men who spent their days ropin' and ridin'.

This was just part of a day long history lesson for students at Henrietta Elementary School.

"The cowboy way of life was such an important part of our history and we feel like they need to learn about that," said Kendra Bennett, the Henrietta Elementary School Principal.

"I was raised around it and it's so great to be around it again, but also to show these kids and let them kind of check it all out."

Professional bull rider, Ross Coleman, gave students a front row seat to his "team roping."

"It's pretty much like cowboy golf. Everybody loves to play golf, it's challenging, it's a lot of fun." Coleman said.

And after cheering on Coleman and his team student got to give it a go.

Some seemed so natural at the roping, and for others it was a little more difficult.

Dressed up as cowboys and cowgirls students went on hay rides and even enjoyed adding to their ensembles.

Coloring and decorating their very own bandanas.

And though it may have seemed like all fun and games it was the tune which brought them back, reminding them of their roots and the importance of the cowboy way of life.

Those students will also get to join in on the festivities for the Pioneer Reunion.

On Friday school is canceled so they can all enjoy the float parade at 10 a.m.
