SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WFRV) Sheboygan's new mayor has officially taken office.

After defeating former Mayor Bob Ryan in a recall election earlier this month, Terry Van Akkeren was sworn in Monday night.  He was surrounded by friends and family members during the event - his son and son-in-law are current council members themselves.

City Clerk Sue Richards says this is an historic moment for Sheboygan.  They've never had a mayor recalled before.  Ryan was ousted after a public drinking incident in Elkhart Lake.  He still could face sexual assault charges stemming from that incident.

"I wish Bob all the best for him and his family," says Van Akkeren.  "What happens with the DA, the city will have nothing to do with."

The District Attorney is still reviewing the case against Ryan.  A final decision is expected late this week or early next week.
