Sheppard Elementary Students Welcome Iwo Jima Veterans to Town

The annual Iwo Jima Reunion is officially underway.
The annual Iwo Jima Reunion is officially underway in Wichita Falls after hundreds of students welcomed the veterans to town.

Sheppard Elementary School students lined the hallways of their school, waved american flags, and cheered for Iwo Jima veterans as they entered the school.

Student council members served lunch to the veterans before escorting them to an assembly and choir concert that thanked them for their service.

It's an annual event these veterans say they'll never take for granted.

Lawrence Valentine, an Iwo Jima veteran, says, "I'm from Oklahoma City and they're not into this at all. I'm not sure any young people there know about Iwo Jima."

Dud Morris, an Iwo Jima veteran, says, "There's so much respect that they give you. We just appreciate them. So much."

The Iwo Jima Reunion continues through Sunday.
