WHETHER CHRISTIAN, JEWISH, MUSLIM, OR BUDDIST EACH RELIGION IS REPRESENTED IN THE MILITARY BY A CHAPLAIN.

"We chaplains unlike anyone else in the military wear two hats. We are part of the military, all chaplains are officers, but we are also part of a religious community. Responsible to both."

ONE OUTREACH TOOL IS THE STUDENT ROCK CAFE.
SHEPPARD RECENTLY RECIEVED A 4-MILLION DOLLAR GRANT TO RENOVATE THE CAFE. IT'S A PLACE FOR AIRMEN TO GET OUT OF THE DORMS AND SOCIALIZE.

"For the students that go there, it's convienient for them, the more for them to use, the gaming equipment, it's a different setting for them to relax, a more relaxed environment."

CHAPLAINS ARE NOT JUST ASSIGNED TO BASES...THEY GO WHEREEVER THE AIR FORCE GOES.
CHAPLAIN HARTWELL RETURNED FROM A SIX MONTH DEPLOYMENT IN BALAD, IRAQ WITH 72 OTHER CHAPLAINS AND ASSISTANTS LAST MARCH.

"It focused on ministry among the soldiers, ministry on the flight line because we had F-16's there, and ministry in the busiest combat hospitals in Iraq at that time."

CHAPLAIN HARTWELL SAYS HE WAS HAPPY TO GET THE CHANCE TO GET OUT FROM BEHIND A DESK AFTER ABOUT 7 YEARS AND GET ON THE FRONT LINES.

"There's great joy in answering emails and things but there's far more joy in standing next to a person who's life has been radically changed through injury, through being wounded and saying the Lord is here with you, you're not alone. That was the greatest experience of my life."
