Gunfire erupted in a Boston suburb Friday evening, less than an hour after police said residents could leave their homes even though the marathon bombing suspect was still on the run after an all-day, door-to-door search.

The barrage of gunfire was heard in Watertown, Mass., which had been the focus of the manhunt. Police and armored vehicles tore down a street.

The shots erupted less than an hour after Massachusetts State Police Col. Timothy Alben told a press conference that fugitive Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, had probably not left the state but that a lockdown was lifted.
