Sports Spotlight: Elite 14 Showcase-November 6, 2013

Hirschi High School hosted the Elite 14 Showcase
The high school basketball season is upon us.

The girls tipped things off this week while next week it will be the the boys turn.

Last weekend, there was big basketball event at Hirschi High School in the annual Elite 14 Showcase.

The event began as the Texas-Oklahoma shootout 9 years ago.

It consisted of 5 teams from Oklahoma and 5 teams from Texas has grown to elite status.

The Elite 14 showcase brings together 22 of the best high school basketball teams from not only the Oklahoma and Texas region, but also outside the region in preparation for the upcoming season.

The man who has played a big roll in the birth and growth of the event is Hirschi basketball coach Donald Hedge.

"I am a basketball nut, I am a basketball gym rat," said Hedge.

Hedge says he is excited about this high level style of basketball.

"A lot of these guys are McDonald's All-Americans, Jordan Brand All-Americans, alot of these people will be 1st round draft pics in a few years. So it is exciting to see these guys compete right here in our gym," said Hedge.

With all of this top notch talent hitting the hoop court, it wasn't a surprise that some Division 1 colleges coaches came to check out the players.

Just to see the college coaches in the stands. Some of these college coaches I really idolized, I really follow their careers. And to see them in the Hirschi stands in Wichita Falls is really special to me.

The format is set up to where every team plays in three-two quarter games.

It is a great opportunity for my guys to play such state championship competition. It is hard to simulate that in practice.

Its an event like this that's a slam dunk in helping teams get ready for the season and a state championship run.
