This past weekend after rider's emotional game three win against Cleburne in the 4A regional finals, head coach Scot Green had his players kneel down for his traditional post game speech. Except this one was different. Not because they had just won a regional final, they've done that three of the last four years. This one was different, because it was one of the last post game speeches green will give to his team.
Kneeling down after defeating Cleburne in the regional final on Friday, the Rider Raiders looked up at their coach. And he asked them the one thing he's always said is most important above all else. In unison they answered with one word, family. Green stepping down after over 20 years at rider. To spend more time with his. "I've missed a lot of my family's time. I've got a son, I've got a daughter, both of them are going to be juniors. One is a junior in high school one is a junior in college.  And my mom and dad are very important to me too. I haven't been able to spend as much time with those guys as I've wanted to. I told these guys from the get go, family is the most important thing. I've missed a lot and i need to take a step back and reconnect."
Green also said that there's no other group he'd rather make his last trip to state with than this team. A team that's battled through multiple one game playoffs and taken their last two series by winning the deciding game 3. "What a fun group to take down there with me. It's just sometimes you never know. I tell these guys they need to cherish it. And these guys have been there three times and I've told them, guys, this just doesn't happen."
And mason stone. One of the seniors that's been so instrumetal in the raiders success this post season...When asked if he was surprised at coaches decision..."nope, i knew he was waiting for us to leave..."
And today. For one last time. Coach got to send the team off in dramatic fashion. One more trip to state. And hopefully. One more state title. And although he may be done coaching, what he's done for so many young men at rider will no doubt not be forgotten.
